Implications of Domain Changes

Domain changes should not be taken lightly, as the site will lose its ranking and traction on search engine results.

Changing domains may result in link rot — that is, backlinks to the old domain will be broken and won't lead to the correct site or page any longer.

With some registrars like Network Solutions, there may also be a charge for domain forwarding. GoDaddy does not charge to forward domains.

Reasons for Domain Change

Good Reasons for Requesting Domain Change:

  • Rebranding the shop, eg. you're a new owner
  • Prefer a different name, or a new domain (such as the .com version of flowershop.net) opened up
  • Would prefer for eventual higher search engine ranking
  • Forwarding secondary domains to the main URL
  • Forwarding with masking
