Connecting a cash drawer to a Mac can be unintuitive to Windows users who are accustomed to adding peripheral devices under the receipt printer settings from the Control Panel.
To connect a cash drawer to a receipt printer on a Mac, you'll use a system called CUPS. Before you begin setup with CUPS, check that:
- "Use Receipt Printer" is set to Yes in Floranext under Settings > POS Settings > POS Settings
- The cash drawer cable is connected firmly to the receipt printer and the receipt printer isn't showing any error lights
- The cash drawer isn't popping when completing an order, or by using the Open Drawer dropdown option and printing a blank receipt
You can use this guide (with images!) or the instructions below.
Access CUPS from a Browser
Go to http://localhost:631/printers/
If you get a message saying "Web Interface is Disabled" or "Server can't be reached," you will need to enable CUPS.
- Go to the magnifying glass icon in the upper-right of the screen, search for "terminal," and open the command prompt
- In Terminal, paste cupsctl WebInterface=yes (or paste it in from the CUPS error message screen in your browser)
- You may need to enter the admin username and password—the username is usually the computer admin's name, without spaces and all lowercase (eg. Albert Einstein becomes alberteinstein). If you need to check or change the username, follow these instructions:
- Go to System Preferences > Users > Accounts and find the account
- Click the padlock icon to enable changes
- Cmd + click the user account and choose Advanced Options
- Change the account name to all lowercase if it isn't already, and save changes (you may need to enter your password)
- Now that CUPS is enabled, go back to http://localhost:631/printers/
Enable Cash Drawer
Select the receipt printer and choose Default Options. Click Cash Drawer Control, choose Open Drawer 1 from the list, and click Set Default Options to save.
You did it! Try opening your drawer from within Floranext to test it out!
